Speed Cameras? Are they a Good thing or a Bad thing?
Do you think they should ban them or are they worth the revenue they produce for the government ? Are they keeping drivers from speeding in built up areas?

They are a bad thing, I drive everywhere and the static speed cameras only stop people speeding at the place where there situated, as soon as people have passed them they speed up again. I cannot see the point of them, other than to bring in a revenue from motorists

They are really pointless - cars slow down approaching at the last minute, then speed up as soon as they are past one - real waste of time! Some towns have removed them - lets hope they all go eventually!

totally agree. There is one on the A32 Gosport to Fareham by Fareham creek that causes noticeable traffic congestion. Traffic could move safely at 40mph at that point for most of the day but is forced to slow down to 30mph. At other times you are lucky to be doing 30mph at all!
The one at Southbourne is also pretty pointless. You have to slow down for the mini-roundabout anyway if you are westbound or else in eastbound there is a 40mph within a few yards of the camera. It's just a money trap, nothing to do with road safety.

Some of the cameras are situated in pointless positions! The Southbourne one needs to be further down the road and the Eastern Road one in Portsmouth causes congestion when the road merges from one lane into two lanes. They need to have that one near the Harvester where everyone speeds!
You never see them outside schools or colleges where they are most needed!

They are not really effective. People learn of their locations and adjust their speed accordingly. Some people panic when they see one and slam their brakes on. Half of them don't have any film in them anyway. An effective and constant TV ad campaign showing the statistics and results of accidents caused by excess speed would be more effective, a constant reminder to everyone to the dangers of speeding. A bit like those films you see at school of the kid going onto the railway tracks and being electrocuted. Seeing that kept me well away from the train lines, even to this day.
